About the Scovel Cross
The Scovel cross was given to Faith Community while we were still meeting in the gymnasium at Village Oaks Elementary School in 1977. It was given to us by the Scovel Memorial Presbyterian church in Detroit, which went out of existence before Faith was chartered.
A member of Scovel Church, who was a metallurgical engineer, made the cross. He asked members of Scovel's congregation to bring in anything that was made of brass such as door knobs, candlesticks, or keys. After he crafted the mold, he melted the brass that was contributed by the congregation and poured it into the mold to make the cross. The Scovel cross measures 36.8 inches tall, 17.3 inches across, and weighs 155 pounds. It was part of Scovel's Worship for many years. When Scovel Presbyterian was dissolved, Mrs. Elizabeth Livingstone, agent for property that remained, donated the cross to our Church. We were told that the cross was made by Mrs. Livingstone's husband.
The Scovel cross has been an important part of our church's history. It represents a connection, a continuity within the Presbyterian Church across time and generations. The inscription at the base of the cross reads:
THE SCOVEL CROSS
