Musings February 2017by Richard J. Henderson
How can we being to thank you for the amazing retirement events this past weekend? We feel privileged to have received such a warm and touching farewell.
We were overwhelmed beginning with Friday evening when we walked into the most beautiful space that was transformed into a warm dining room. The decorations were amazing – the lamps, candles, flowers. It was so wonderful to see a room full of friends and relatives and celebrate together. We remembered events from long ago and saw some friends we haven’t seen in quite some time.
The dinner was delicious and the program which followed was the perfect blend of the serious, the meaningful, and the hilarious (Thank you Carnac the Magnificent and your able assistant). We are so happy that a gift is going to be made in our names to support the Living Waters Project in Guatemala. We have been there several times and know of the dangers from the water. That we can be part of improving the lives of our friends in San Lucas Toliman is deeply gratifying.
Following the program in the worship area we had a delightful time talking with all those who had gathered as we shared the fabulous desserts.
We hadn’t had a chance to recover from Friday night when we were again blessed with the most memorable Sunday morning service. The worship service was more difficult for us to handle emotionally than anything else. I supposed that’s the way it should be.
The service was filled with music and such love and support from all of you and from Al Timm from Presbytery. Special thanks from Sheila for the hugs of the kids, the roses are beautiful bracelet with the Faith charm which she will wear proudly and which will remind her always of your love and generosity. We are especially thankful for the song that was commissioned for the congregation – “Community” – and for Rebekah and John for writing and playing it so beautifully on Sunday. Also thanks to Dave and Joyce Butler for rewriting the songs on Friday night and for singing the beautiful songs on Sunday morning. “The Lord Bless You and Keep You” was the perfect way to end the service on Sunday.
We feel so privileged to have received the quilt on which so many people wrote comments. We will hang it in our home and always remember your kindness. Special thanks to the music department for our farewell reception on January 25th. It was so good to be with those we sang and played bells with. Your generosity and farewells were warmly received.
We can’t thank you enough for all the planning and work that went into the incredible events of this weekend. It was a time we will always remember and cherish.
All of you mean so much to us and we love you all. We thank you for all of the love and support you have offered us as we leave what has been our faith home for 40 years. You are a great church family and we will miss you, but we will never forget you!
